Darwinian Evolution / Competitive Destruction
Portfolio

In biology, Darwinian Evolution means that animals must adapt to their environment or they go extinct. In business, this is called Competitive Destruction.

The world changes, and if a company doesn't change with it, a newer, faster "predator" (a competitor) will eat its lunch.

1. Why most businesses die

Think of businesses like species. Most companies are like the Dodo bird: they are perfectly suited for a very specific world. When the world changes (new technology, different customer tastes, or a global pandemic), they can't adapt fast enough and they "die" (go bankrupt).

2. What is "Staying Power"?

When an investor asks, "Why does this one have staying power?" they are asking if the company has a biological advantage (called a Moat) that prevents it from being destroyed.

There are usually four "Super-Powers" that give a business staying power:

3. The "Red Queen" Effect

In Alice in Wonderland, the Red Queen says, "It takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place."

Evolution is a race. To have staying power, a business can't just be good once; it has to be better at evolving than everyone else. It has to constantly "destroy" its old self to build a new version that fits the new world.

The Lesson: If you see a company that has been around for 100 years, don't just look at what they sell. Look at how many times they changed what they sell to avoid being "competitively destroyed."
